It was a late Tuesday evening, the sky painted in hues of pink and orange as the sun dipped below the horizon, marking the end of another bustling day. As a driven entrepreneur navigating the complexities of the tech scene in Austin, I was winding down from a series of back-to-back meetings, each echoing a similar narrative of aspiration and struggle. My mind, however, lingered on a conversation I had earlier with a young intern, ambitious yet visibly disheartened. They shared how despite their love for tech, breaking into the industry felt akin to solving an intricate puzzle without all the pieces. This sentiment, though not new, struck a chord within me, igniting a spark in the depths of my entrepreneurial spirit. Amidst the quiet of my office, with the city lights beginning to shimmer outside, a thought began to take shape—a vision for leveraging VR and XR technologies not merely as tools for innovation, but as bridges to opportunity, offering those on the periphery the missing pieces to complete their puzzles. This was the moment the seeds for the blog post were sown, borne out of a desire to not just navigate the future, but actively shape it, ensuring it’s inclusive, equitable, and full of promise for all who dare to dream.
As a Black Feminist Abolitionist, my journey has been anything but ordinary. From enduring the hardships of a low-income upbringing and surviving a violent relationship to overcoming the barriers of incarceration, my path has led me to a profound understanding of the urgent need for justice and equity in our society. My experiences have not only shaped who I am but have also fueled my dedication to advocating for the rights and upward mobility of formerly incarcerated individuals. It is through this lens of resilience and unwavering commitment that I write today, aiming to shed light on the critical issue of fostering social and economic mobility for those reentering society after incarceration.
The reality of reentry has been a persistent challenge for over 233 years, yet the discussion around its collateral consequences – especially regarding employment opportunities, financial stability, family reunification, and overall social and economic mobility – remains inadequately addressed. These challenges are not just byproducts of the criminal justice system; they are deeply rooted in systemic racism and bias that disproportionately affect Black and Brown communities and those who do not conform to traditional gender norms.
One of the most daunting obstacles faced by formerly incarcerated individuals is securing stable employment. The stigma attached to a criminal record, compounded by employer discrimination and an often limited access to education and job training programs, creates a formidable barrier to reentry. Yet, stable employment is essential for building upward social and economic mobility, allowing individuals to support themselves and their families, contribute to their communities, and break the cycle of poverty and recidivism.
Financial stability is another significant hurdle. Many returning citizens are burdened with fines, fees, and court costs that can feel insurmountable. The lack of access to affordable housing, credit, and other financial services only exacerbates the problem, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to rebuild their lives post-incarceration.
The impact of incarceration on families cannot be overstated. The systemic targeting and incarceration of Black and Brown individuals often result in broken families, strained relationships, and the arduous process of family reunification. The emotional and psychological toll on both the incarcerated individuals and their families is immense and can have lasting effects long after reentry.
Furthermore, the importance of workforce development programs and initiatives aimed at improving overall social and economic mobility for formerly incarcerated individuals cannot be understated. These programs are crucial in providing the support and resources needed for successful reintegration into society. Yet, access to these programs is often limited, leaving many without the necessary tools to navigate the challenges of reentry.
It is time for us, as a society, to recognize and address these issues head-on. We must work to dismantle the systemic barriers that perpetuate the cycle of poverty, trauma, and recidivism among formerly incarcerated individuals. By advocating for policies that eliminate barriers to employment, education, and housing, and by supporting initiatives that promote family reunification and provide access to workforce development programs, we can make a significant impact.
Moreover, we must challenge the negative stereotypes and biases that surround those with histories of incarceration, as well as Black and Brown bodies and genders that do not conform to traditional norms. Promoting understanding, empathy, and compassion is essential in building a more equitable and just society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
As the Executive Director of Unapologetically HERS and a seasoned advocate for justice, I am committed to centering the needs and voices of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women of color. Through my work, I strive to create meaningful change and to ensure that those who have experienced reentry have the tools and support necessary to achieve the social and economic mobility they deserve.
Let us commit to taking action and ensuring that formerly incarcerated individuals are not only heard but also valued members of our communities. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
At the heart of my entrepreneurial journey is a deep-seated belief that every individual deserves access to the means for personal and professional growth, often obstructed by systemic barriers. This core value drives my commitment to orchestrating change and providing tools for empowerment. Sharing this post is more than an act of professional insight; it’s part of a larger mission to catalyze positive transformations in the lives of those society has often overlooked—especially the formerly incarcerated seeking reintegration and upward mobility.
